The route: under the North Sea Canal
From Heemskerk the road runs along the N197 past Beverwijk onto the A22, where it dives into the Velsertunnel and passes under the North Sea Canal. On the far side it becomes the A9, and the A200 — the Amsterdamseweg — takes you into Haarlem. That is about twenty kilometres to the station; if you need the Grote Markt, allow another four kilometres across town.
That tunnel is also the only uncertain part of this ride. Outside rush hour you sail straight through and stand in Haarlem in a good twenty minutes. Between seven and nine in the morning it can come to a standstill, and during a closure or maintenance the traffic is diverted through the Wijkertunnel on the A9 — a detour of about fifteen minutes.
If you have to be somewhere at a fixed time — an appointment at the Spaarne Gasthuis, a train from Haarlem station — put that in the notes field when you book. Then we build in that margin instead of leaving you to guess.
