Velsen is not a village but seven of them, and they are not all the same distance from the airport. So there is no single price for Velsen — below is what the ride from your own village costs.

Sorted by distance: nearer is cheaper. Every amount applies there and back, day and night, with no surcharge.
Seven villages and six rows: Santpoort-Noord and Santpoort-Zuid share one fare, because the difference in kilometres is too small to make two amounts of it. If you live in either, the Santpoort row applies.
The driving times were measured without traffic — in the morning rush it takes longer, and we allow for that when planning.

The canal cuts Velsen in two
The North Sea Canal cuts Velsen in two. Velsen-Noord lies on one side, the rest on the other, and the Velsertunnel runs between them. That is exactly why Velsen-Noord is further from Schiphol than Velsen-Zuid, even though on the map they look like neighbours.
We work with the actual route, tunnel and ferry included. A route planner that does not know about the ferry turns a nine-kilometre ride into a twenty-six kilometre detour — and then you are paying for kilometres you never travelled.
This corner is awkward by train. Driehuis and Santpoort-Noord have a station, but from either of them Schiphol means changing at Haarlem. IJmuiden has had no passenger train at all since 1983, and Velsen-Noord is on the wrong side of the canal. With luggage and an early flight that makes for a long morning.

The railway does not stop everywhere
There are three stations in the municipality: Driehuis, Santpoort Noord and Santpoort Zuid, all three on the Haarlem – Uitgeest local line. If you live there, the train gets you a long way — though Schiphol always means changing.
There is no station in IJmuiden, Velserbroek and Velsen-Noord. IJmuiden had one, but that line closed in September 1983. Anyone living there starts every rail journey with a bus or a car — and with a suitcase and a morning flight, that is a different matter from one car at the door.
The ferry across the canal does run day and night, every twenty minutes. It is there for pedestrians, cyclists and mopeds, which are not allowed through the Velsertunnel. We do not use it: a taxi takes the tunnel.
Frequently asked questions
Why does Velsen-Noord cost more than Velsen-Zuid?
Because the North Sea Canal lies between them. On the map they are opposite each other, but a car has to go round it or through it: Velsen-Zuid is 24.0 kilometres from Schiphol and Velsen-Noord 26.3. Those 2.3 kilometres are the difference in the fare, and nothing else.
Which villages have a station?

Yes, and with no surcharge — the same amount as during the day, Sundays and public holidays included. That is not a given in this municipality: the ferry across the canal does run day and night, but a bus to it often does not.
