The route: one motorway, nothing else
From Heemskerk the Assumer Traverse takes you onto the A9, and there you stay for a good twelve kilometres. At the end it becomes the N9 and the Kennemerstraatweg brings you into the centre. You reach the station after about twenty kilometres.
That makes this the most predictable of the four rides. The others always have something that can go wrong — the Velsertunnel towards Haarlem, the ring road at Amsterdam. Here there is nothing: one motorway, one exit.
And the heavy traffic goes the other way in the morning, towards Haarlem and Amsterdam. If you are heading for Alkmaar, you are driving against the flow.
Why people book this ride
Alkmaar station is the interchange for the north: Den Helder, Hoorn, and the train to Schagen. From Heemskerk the car is quicker than the stopping train via Uitgeest, certainly with luggage.
Beyond that, Alkmaar is where people from this corner go for what is not here: a hospital appointment, the theatre, a morning at the cheese market on a Friday in season. For that last one, parking in the centre is exactly the bother you would rather avoid.
