The ride

The route: around the tunnel, not through it

Look at a map and you expect the Velsertunnel, but that lies the wrong way. This route runs east: from Heemskerk through Assendelft onto the A8, then past Zaandam to the A10 ring road and into Amsterdam. That is some twenty-six kilometres to Centraal Station and around thirty to the centre — half an hour outside rush hour.

That saves more than a few kilometres. The Velsertunnel is where things go wrong in this region — rush hour, incidents, maintenance — and this ride does not go near it. What can hold you up is the A8 towards the ring in the morning, and the last few kilometres inside the city itself.

Which side of the city you need matters for the exact address. You reach Amsterdam-Noord sooner than the Zuidas or Zuidoost; from there the ring road is still a fair stretch. That difference is in the amount you see in the booking form.

Why

Why a taxi rather than your own car

Parking inside the ring in Amsterdam runs to seven and a half euros an hour, and in many places it is simply full. For an evening, a concert or an appointment of a few hours that adds up to a sum that covers much of the ride — without the searching, and without the walk back.

If you are having a drink, that is one more reason. And if you are heading for the cruise terminal or Centraal Station with suitcases: with us they go in the boot, not up a station staircase.

  • Amsterdam UMC, both the AMC site in Zuidoost and the VUmc site

Frequently asked questions

How long does the ride from Heemskerk to Amsterdam take?

Outside rush hour about half an hour over some thirty kilometres, via the A8 and the ring road. The morning rush can add a quarter of an hour, and inside the city it depends which side you need. Tell us when you have to be there and we work back from that.

What does a taxi from Heemskerk to Amsterdam cost?

That depends on the number of passengers and where in the city you are going — Noord is closer than Zuidoost. Enter the ride in the booking form and you see the amount before you commit. No night surcharge, no luggage surcharge.

Can you pick us up in Amsterdam at night?

Yes, day and night and on public holidays too, at the same rate. For the journey home after a concert or an evening out it is worth booking ahead: finding a taxi on the street willing to drive to Heemskerk at that hour is hard.

Will six of us fit?

Yes. From five passengers we send a van; it takes the same route and you see the amount for it separately in the booking form. You can also tell us about suitcases and a child seat there.
